Calculus Roundtable High Impact Tutoring Showing Results in the Eastbay
Richmond, CA – September 16, 2025
Calculus Roundtable proudly announces the continued growth of its High Impact Tutoring (HIT) programs, now serving students in Oakland, Richmond, and Pittsburgh, California. The expansion comes on the heels of new national findings presented by the National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) in Washington, D.C., reinforcing that 1:1 high impact tutoring is one of the most effective learning interventions for accelerating student achievement.
According to research shared by Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Elizabeth Ross of Washington, D.C., HIT is driving measurable gains for students from historically marginalized communities.
"Students receiving consistent, high-dosage sessions are showing early signs of improved academic growth, stronger school connections, and higher levels of well-being compared to peers without HIT." said Asst. Superintendent Ross.
"Additionally, evidence shows tutoring programs are helping to combat chronic absenteeism, with students more likely to attend school on tutoring days."
Calculus Roundtable has been at the forefront of implementing these practices in California. By embedding high dosage tutoring in school communities, the organization ensures students receive the academic time they need with expert tutors, while also contributing to school culture and staff support. Many of Calculus Roundtable’s tutors are pursuing teaching credentials, expanding the pipeline of educators who reflect and understand the diverse student populations they serve.
“High Impact Tutoring is not just about boosting test scores,” said Jim Hollis, Executive Director of Calculus Roundtable. “It’s about creating a consistent space where students feel seen, supported, and capable of thriving academically and socially. Our work in Oakland, Richmond, and Pittsburgh is proving what the national research confirms—that tutoring, when delivered with the right intensity and consistency, changes lives.”
Calculus Roundtable’s programs are aligned to grade-level math and science standards, ensuring that students not only catch up but also gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed long term. By blending culturally inclusive instruction with evidence-based tutoring practices, the organization is closing gaps and preparing students for bright futures.About Calculus RoundtableFounded in 2013, Calculus Roundtable is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing math and science outcomes for underserved K–12 students.
