Calculus Roundtable’s San Francisco Community Math Hub connects families and community voices to a regional conversation on mathematics, opportunity and economic mobility.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 29, 2026 — How does access to strong mathematics education shape a young person’s path to college, career and economic security? That question will take center stage at Building San Francisco’s Future Workforce Through High-Impact Math Tutoring, a regional summit taking place October 7, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Southeast Community Center, 1550 Evans Avenue, San Francisco.
Hosted by the Bay Area Tutoring Association in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District and Southeast Community Center, the summit will bring together leaders from education, government, philanthropy, business, workforce development, faith communities and community-based organizations to examine how high-impact tutoring can accelerate student learning and strengthen the pipeline to future careers.
Calculus Roundtable’s San Francisco Community Math Hub is helping connect the summit’s broader conversation to families and neighborhood communities. The Hub provides high-impact tutoring and engaging STEM experiences while creating opportunities for families and community partners to better understand how mathematics affects educational access, career pathways, and long-term economic mobility.
“Mathematics is not simply another subject on a student’s schedule. It determines who gains access to advanced courses, college opportunities, high-growth careers and economic security,” said Jim Hollis, founder and executive director of Calculus Roundtable. “This summit moves the conversation beyond test scores. It asks us to recognize that access to quality mathematics education is both a civil rights and economic mobility issue, and that the entire community has a role in addressing it.
”High-impact tutoring is an evidence-based strategy for accelerating learning and addressing unfinished learning. When delivered consistently by well-trained tutors in partnership with schools and families, it can also strengthen students’ confidence, sense of belonging, and belief that they can succeed in mathematics.
The Community Math Hub builds on that model by bringing together academic support, family engagement, STEM exploration and community leadership. Its goal extends beyond improving math skills to helping communities understand how mathematics connects to household financial security, college access and participation in fields such as technology, healthcare and engineering.
“Families understand their children’s strengths, challenges and aspirations in ways that institutions cannot see on their own,” said Tricia Douglas, coordinator of the Calculus Roundtable Community Math Hub in San Francisco. “The Hub creates a place where families are not treated as spectators. They become informed partners who can ask questions, advocate for resources and help shape opportunities for their children and community.”
“The future workforce begins long before a student applies for their first job,” said Bobby Pope, partnership manager for the African American Achievement and Leadership Initiative at SFUSD. “When students develop strong literacy and real-life math skills—and have access to high-impact tutoring, caring adults and meaningful opportunities—they gain a pathway to future success.”
